What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the final set of teeth to develop, usually emerging between ages 17 and 25. Often, there’s not enough room for them, leading to problems like pain, infection, and crowding.

Why Third Molar Extraction May Be Necessary

1.

If you experience ongoing pain or discomfort in the back of your mouth, it could be due to impacted wisdom teeth.

2.

Swelling, redness, or tenderness around the back gums may signal an infection related to your wisdom teeth.

3.

Wisdom teeth can push other teeth out of alignment, leading to crooked teeth and bite problems.

4.

When wisdom teeth lack the space to erupt properly, they become impacted, potentially causing pain, swelling, and infection.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

  1. Consultation and Assessment: We’ll start with a thorough consultation, including X-rays, to evaluate your wisdom teeth’s position and condition. This helps us create a personalized treatment plan.
  2. Relax and Get Comfortable: Before the procedure, we’ll ensure your comfort with local or general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain.
  3. Gentle Extraction: Our skilled dentist will carefully access the wisdom tooth, gently remove it, and clean the area.
  4. Smooth Recovery: We may place stitches to promote healing, and we’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions for a comfortable recovery.

Dr. Ngo and his staff do a spectacular job! I had a dental emergency one morning and luckily I found Carlsbad Dental Care here on Google and spoke to Haylee over the phone. I got an appointment the same day and had an emergency extraction done. I struggled trying to find a good dentist in my insurance plan for a few years and switched a couple of times and even though my insurance doesn't cover this dentist and it is 30 minutes from home, I still come here because they are extremely kind, professional, personable, and knowledgeable. They care about their patients very much and Dr. Ngo is extremely funny, caring, approachable, and friendly. I'd highly recommend them to anyone!

By far the Best Dentist I have ever been to and I been to a lot. Top notch quality work, great staff and professional people. 4 crowns 3 implants 3 cleanings and a great smile out the door. When I thought I was all done chipped a new tooth eating salad a week later. Did an emergency call got the tooth fixed the next day preventing me from paying for another crown down the line with tooth decay. I love this place and I love that staff. The Very Best!!!

I love this dentist office! They were so accommodating to my schedule for an emergency tooth extraction. I have had horrible experiences with dentists prior and was anxious because I had a traumatic wisdom teeth removal when I was a teenager. They put me right at ease and had great bedside manner the whole time. Despite my fears it was a super easy procedure and I healed incredibly fast. The dental assistant also did an excellent job distracting me during the procedure so it wasn’t that bad. I even got a call from Dr. Raymond checking on me the day after. They truly went above and beyond. I couldn’t recommend this office more!

Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQs

If you have any questions about wisdom teeth removal, we’ve got answers.

Wisdom teeth usually emerge sometime between the ages of 17 and 25.

Most people have their wisdom teeth removed sometime during their high school or college years. But they can continue developing until you’re nearly 30 years old. We typically recommend removing your wisdom teeth as soon as side effects like infection, impaction, or pain develop before they can cause damage to your neighboring healthy teeth.

At Carlsbad Dental Care, we will take periodic dental X-rays to evaluate your wisdom tooth development. This imaging allows us to identify the best time for wisdom tooth removal, depending on your circumstances. Most people have their wisdom teeth removed sometime during their high school or college years. We will assess your case thoroughly to determine the best course of action. Sometimes we only need to remove one or two, and sometimes three or four.

We take special steps to make sure our patients are comfortable during their wisdom tooth removal appointment. We use numbing and sedation medications to help patients feel as little discomfort as possible. In addition, we will provide you with appropriate post-procedure medications and instructions for pain relief.

Wisdom teeth are harder to remove than other teeth because they’re not just one simple extraction but four teeth located in the back of the mouth, usually close to major nerves. Typically, wisdom tooth extraction is performed by our dentist or an oral surgeon, with the option of sedation during the procedure.
